Great
Mississippi River Adventure Series #3
October 8, 2001
Camp Merrill Benson - Mt. Carroll, Illinois
Third Place
| On Sunday,
October 8, 2001, Team HP raced in the Great Mississippi River Adventure
Series #3 at Mount Carroll. The race originated at Camp Merrill
Benson YMCA camp at 0430 a.m. Twenty eight (28) teams participated.
The race began in 26 degree weather under a star filled night sky.
A twenty eight (28) mile mountain biking session started the race
followed by a nine (9) mile navigation/trekking section. A three
(3) mile canoe paddle while navigating followed on the Mississippi
River followed by another two (2) mile trek. Back on to the mountain
bikes for a fifteen (15) mile ride back to Camp Benson. At the camp,
racers followed a marked trail to a 80' rappel down a shear vertical
hard rock cliff into the Plum River. Then down the river coasteering
in knee to thigh deep water to the canyoneering section for one
(1) mile. Up a slippery rock water fall to the Zip line over a 300'
ravine, 100' in the air. Then off to the caving section after a
one (1) mile trail run. The racers crossed the Plum River in waist
deep water to the mouth of a 250' cave where a pumpkin that the
teams had decorated the night before was found. The team then left
the cave across the river again with another one (1) mile trail
run to the finish. Team HP finished 3rd overall and 3rd in the 4
person division. The team wished to thank race director Mike Ehredt
and all of the volunteers for making this series of races the most
racer oriented and least controversial of any. A true class act. |
