• 5/6/08 - Gerry taught camp fire building skills and wild land fire safety to 36 6th Graders from the Apple River Middle School (Elizabeth, Illinois) at Camp Benson in Mt. Carroll, Illinois.  The outdoor learning experience was presented by the Conservation Guardians and the University of Illinois Extension Service.
  • 2/16/06 - Gerry participated in the Rock Island Arsenal Health Fair representing High Profile Adventure Racing.  Over 1600 Arsenal employees toured the exhibit and were introduced to adventure racing and the Thunder Rolls Adventure Race
  • 5/23 - 5/24/06 - At the invitation of Matt Ostrom, owner of Active Endeavors, Gerry attended "Outdoor University" at Devils Lake State Park near Baraboo, Wisconsin.  This two day event involved new product introductions, product use updates, and a presentation by Ed Viesturs.  Meetings with product representatives resulted in sponsorships for The Thunder Rolls Adventure Race and Team Enviromark - Orthopaedic Specialists.

  • 4/26/05 - Gerry spoke to the Quad City Sports Commission and the Quad City Hotel and Motel Association joint meeting at the Holiday Inn in Moline, Illinois. The 2004 Thunder Rolls Adventure Race video was presented to the 30 participants in attendance. The presentation was well received and support was offered by both organizations. Quad City Visitors and Convention Bureau, Director Joe Taylor wrote the following e-mail:

         "Thank you for your presentation and for organizing such a great event in the Quad Cities. What came through loud and clear to me in your presentation was your love and appreciation of the natural heritage of the greater Quad Cities region. I think it is a special person who considers ways to benefit and bring opportunities to small towns and their churches. I consider it an honor to have gotten to know you and your event better. Call on me if I can help. QCCBB will add to its calendar and include in media mailings. Thanks, Joe."

  • 4/23/05 - Gerry and Frances volunteered at the GMRAS "Last Great Race", put on by friend and teammate, Mike Ehredt. The race was a great success and the rappel set up by Gerry was memorable. Congratulations to Randy, Becky, and Jamey for completing the challenging course and weather conditions.

  • 2/16/05 - Gerry and Frances participated in the Rock Island Arsenal Health Fair. The fair was organized by fellow adventure racer and MWR Fitness and Wellness Specialist, Desiree Reid. The fair was well attended with 62 vendors and over 1,000 attendees. The 2004 Thunder Rolls video was presented along with registration information for the 2005 race. A number people expressed and interest to either race or volunteer.

  • 1/24/05 - Frances Fitzgerald is the feature spotlight in the February 2005 issue of Women Incorporated (WINC) Magazine!  Check out the article, congratulations Frances!

  • 1/11/05 - On Tuesday, January 11, 2005, Gerry spoke to the Bettendorf Kiwanis Club at their noon meeting at the Lodge. He presented the 2004 Thunder Rolls Adventure Race video for the first time. It was well received with many questions and enthusiastic support. There were 15 in attendance.

    8/6/04 - Gerry, Randy and Frances participated in the Bix 7 Genesis Health and Fitness Expo on Thursday, July 22 and Friday, July 23 at the River Center in Davenport. At the invitation of Kathy ropeMcElhiney and race director Ed Froehlich, High Profile Adventure Racing arranged for our sponsors, Healthy Habits, Active Endeavors, and Orthopaedic Specialists to participate. An adventure racing cluster of exhibits also included Gold's Gym and Running Wild. Lujack's provided a 2005 Subaru Forester. A 40' ascent rope was hung from the ceiling anchored by the Forester. Adventure Sports magazine provided free copies of the July issue and Silent Sports Magazine along with editor Joel Patenaude in attendance, handed out copies of the August issue featuring adventure racing. Over 60 interested people signed up for e-mail announcements on upcoming races and training events. Media coverage was outstanding. Morning radio talk show icons, Q106.5's Dwyer and Michael's, attempted to ascend the rope. Ultimately, one did and one didn't. They spent a lot of time on the air analyzing their efforts. KWQC, TV 6 broadcast the interview between Gerry and Paula Sands twice. Once during the Paula Sands Live Show and also during the evening news. The Expo proved to be quite successful for meeting and talking with interested people, for exposure of our sponsors, and getting the word out on the upcoming Thunders Rolls Adventure Race. A special thank you to John Hobbs for the idea and for opening the door.

  • 4/6/04 - Congratulations to Mark Martin of WQAD television for being recognized by the Illinois Associated Press as "best reporter." High Profile Adventure Racing played a role in this recognition. Martin's winning stories included the piece on "thrill seeking" which was run as a three part series, one part featuring Team High Profile on July 29, 2003. (see July 31, 2003 news and pictures) The April 5, 2004 Quad-City Times ran a story by Ron Lorenzen recognizing area media award winners.


  • 3/20/04 - Team EnviromarkOn Saturday, February 28, 2004, Gerry, Frances, Ron and Sue Stonitsch, raced as Team Enviromark in the Chicago Orienteering Club's Snogaine, held at the Mississippi Palisades State Park, located north of Savanna, Illinois. The day was warm and sunny with melting snow on the north slopes, leading to muddy and slippery conditions. PERFECT! 78 people on 34 teams competed. Teams were either two or four person. The goal was to get as many of the 25 markers as possible in 6 hours. Only 12 of the 34 teams got all of the markers. Team Enviromark placed 7th, getting all of the markers in 5 hours and 16 minutes. We were also the only 4 person team to get all of the markers. Thank you to our good friend Kathy Bullard for once again putting on a great race and for the excellent pasta and salad bar.

  • 2/24/04 - On February 20 -21, 2004, Gerry, Randy and Becky attended IATO'S World Congress on Adventure + Ecotourism at the Navy Pier Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois.

    On Friday, February 20, the United States Adventure Racing Association (USARA) held its annual seminar and meeting. On Sunday, February 21, the annual IATO's Adventure Race, promoted by Leo and Tammy Grant, was held. Randy raced with Fever River 3 and Gerry volunteered as the tyrolean traverse guy perched high above the exhibit floor. The weekend was a great time to meet old friends and promote the Thunder Rolls Adventure Race.

  • 2/12/04 - On Wednesday, February 11, 2004, Gerry and Randy participated in the Rock Island Arsenal Health Fair. High Profile Adventure Racing sponsors Orthopaedic Specialists, Healthy Habits, Active Endeavors and Red Bull were represented and formed an adventure racing grouping. The health fair goers were encouraged to try ascending a fixed rope. The video presentation of the 2003 "The Thunder Rolls" Adventure race was shown. New contacts were made and the sport of adventure racing was presented to over 1000 Arsenal employees. Thank you to Desiree Reed of Team Uncalled Four for the invitation.
         


  • 1/30/04 - On Sunday, January 18, 2004, Gerry and Frances led a group of twelve hearty adventurers on a winter mountaineering expedition to the Mississippi Palisades State Park, north of Savanna, Illinois. After a 3 mile trail run, the group rappelled and ascended off of 80' cliffs located in the northwest portion of the park. For some, it was their first exposure to the mountaineering skills often found in adventure races. For others, it was an opportunity to practice their skills and reduce cabin fever. Although a bright sunny winter day, temperatures quickly fell into the single digits with 20+ mph winds bringing the windchill to the -20's. Even with brittle hands and feet, the group spent six hours enjoying the adventure. Teams Enviromark, Uncalled Four, and Chirosport were all represented. In addition to Gerry and Frances, Lyn Hawbaker, Christa and Todd Buenting, John Hobbs, Jayme Sanders, Ron and Sue Stonitsch, Mary Krause, Melaine Whitchelo, and Patti Meyer.

      

  • 12/2/03 - Frances attended the Montrail Women's Adventure Workshop in Big Bear Lake, California, on October 2 - 5, 2003. The workshop was presented by Karen Lundgren and Paul Romero of Team Epinephrine.


  • 10/31/03 - Congratulations to Randy, Jamey Sanders, and Frank Flack for their 2nd Place Overall finish at the inaugural Illinois Adventure Racing Sprint Championships held on Sunday, October 5, 2003 in and around Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Racing under the name, "Out of the Blue" they completed the course in 10:31, only 11 minutes out of the top position on the podium as held by our friend Stacey Dean and Loose Gravel.

    At the same race, Gerry teamed up with Leo Grant from Adventure North to design and operate the ropes course. The ropes course consisted of a 90' virgin rappel into the Waukarusa River and a 200' zip line, off a cliff, over the river to the opposite bank. All of the racers were highly complimentary of the beauty, challenge, and spectacular nature of the ropes course.

  • 7/31/03 - On Tuesday, July 29, 2003, Team Enviromark was profiled in a prime time news story by Mark Martin of Television Channel 8, WQAD, Moline, Illinois. The segment was filmed at Devils Glen Park.
              
    7/14/03 - Team Enviromark will be competing in the Ford Adventure Sport Challenge at Beaver Creek, Colorado, July 17 - 20, 2003.  They will compete in the Balance Bar 24 Hour Adventure race.  The event will be televised on NBC Sports, KWQC TV 6, on September 13, 2003 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and on September 27, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 
    "The race is offering one of the largest prize offerings in adventure sports competition and will draw the top teams from around the world to tackle the course of high altitude, world-class white water, and some of the most challenging terrain anywhere."

    4/14/03 - On Wednesday evening, April 9, Gerry, Randy and Becky attended the Chicago Area Adventure Racing Association's "AR Night" at the Moosejaw retail store in Chicago. Gerry, representing Frontier Adventure Racing, the premier adventure racing company in Canada, had the honor of unveiling the U.S. premier of Outdoor Life Networks TV coverage of the 2002, Land Rover's Raid the North Extreme held in the Yukon Territory. The program has been nominated for an award in cinematography by the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association.

    It is truly adventure race coverage as never seen before! Gerry spoke about the core values of FAR.Inc., "Commitment to the environment, an expedition approach to course design, and making the experience more than a race". The presentation and video were well received by the twenty five (25) people in attendance. Becky and Randy interacted with the attendees answering questions on Team Enviromark and past race experiences. All attendees received a CD Rom of the Raid the North Extreme. Thank you's to Jeffery Wolte, Chris Farino, and Joel of Moosejaw and Bruce from CAARA, for their assistance and hospitality.

    4/7/03 - Over the weekend of April 4 - April 5, Gerry, Randy and Becky volunteered at the 24 hour/100 mile Great Mississippi River Adventure Series race held in the Mt. Carroll, Savanna, and Galena, Illinois region. Weather conditions were brutual with rain, hail, snow, 20° temperatures, and 25 mph winds. Gerry assisted in setting up and running the zip-line and ascending ropes courses. Randy and Becky staffed the zip-line checkpoint and assisted with the rappelling event. All were on the course overnight and for the full 24 hours. The race director, Mike Ehredt along with many competitors, were extremely complimentary and appreciative of the team. Although the race was difficult due to the weather conditions, it was successful.

  • 2/10/03 - Team High Profile, also known as Team Enviromark, veterans of 14 national and international adventure races shared their experiences and valuable "lessons learned" at Active Endeavors in Davenport on Saturday, February 1st.  This informative and fast paced multi-media presentation prepared participants to join and successfully complete multi-day races.  The presentation was made to 28 people and was well received by all in attendance.   • 6/25/02 - Golds GymOn Monday, June 24th, Team High Profile, presented a program on "Discover Adventure Racing" at the Gold's Gym in Davenport, Iowa.  There were 25 people in attendance.  THP has partnered with Gold's to conduct an orientation and training program on the various components of adventure racing.  A weekend mini-race and retreat at Camp Merrill Benson in Mount Carroll, Illinois will be held in September.  If interested in participating, contact Tina Lindquist at (563) 355-2900.   • 6/12/02 - Gerry spoke to 15 members of the Bettendorf Kiwanis Club noon meeting at the Lodge on Tuesday, June 12.  He made the "Introduction to Adventure Racing" Powerpoint presentation and talked about the relationship between adventure racing and the business environment.

  • 6/5/02 - On Thursday, June 30, Gerry and Randy met with the Davenport West High School, Boy Scout Ventureing group. The "Introduction to Adventure Racing" Powerpoint Presentation was shown. Hands-on equipment displays with a question and answer period followed. The West High School group was enthusiastic and have committed at least one team to race in the BSA Adventure Race to be held in August at Loud Thunder Scout Camp. The West High group is led by Jodie Zimmerman.

  • 5/1/02 - Boy Scouts Gerry and Randy addressed the Illowa Council of the Boy Scouts of America on Monday, April 30, 2002.  The "Introduction to Adventure Racing" Powerpoint presentation set the stage for a discussion by the 18 scout leaders present, representing 25 troops, to include adventure racing in the summer camp program held at Loud Thunder Scout Camp.

    Venturing ProgramThe program would involve members of Team High Profile making adventure racing presentations to interested troops.  The troops would form teams from Interested members.  The various skills would then be taught to the team members during the summer camps.  An adventure race would then be held for the teams at the Scout Jamboree held in August at Loud Thunder.  The  program would be for both male and female scouts involved in the "Venturing" program. The presentation and concept was met with enthusiasm and interest by all.

     
  • 4/25/02 - Visit Raid Gauloises to follow our friend Danny Suter as he races with Terraforce in Vietnam and our friend Jeremy Rodgers who raced with Smoked Tomatoes in the New Zealand Eco-Challenge.

  • 4/02/02 - On Saturday, March 16,2002, IMAXTeam High Profile had the honor of representing adventure racing at the Grand Opening of the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science Science IMAX Theatre in Davenport, Iowa.The team talked to the public about the sport and the equipment used. Active Endeavors, a team sponsor, had a booth set up with gear and clothing. The IMAX movie was "Journey into Amazing Caves" starring Nancy Aulenbach and Dr. Hazel Barton. The team met and talked to the stars about caving, adventure racing and gear.

  • 3/7/02 - Gerry and Randy made a presentation on adventure racing to the FJ Chapter of PEO on Friday, March 1. The power point presentation titled "Introduction to Adventure Racing" was well received by the 30 attendees with much interest and many questions.
     
  • 10/5/01 - Gerry presented the "Introduction to Adventure Racing at Dicks on Friday night. Approximately 20 people were in attendance. The Power Point presentation lasted 30 minutes with another 30 minutes of questions.
     
  • 9/05/01 - Last night, Gerry spoke to approximately 25 members of FORC (Friends of Off Road Cycling) at their business meeting on Adventure Racing and co-sponsoring an adventure race at Loud Thunder next year.  The presentation was well received and a number of individuals expressed an interest in racing and learning the skills required.  The meeting was at Front Street Brewery at 6:00 p.m.
